| Abstract: | This Background Supplement summaries the institution and policies of the European Community (EC) with particular emphasis on the legislative programme, based on the 1985 white Paper, Completing the Internal Market, whose guidelines have been largely followed, despite some adaptation. Some of the legislation is already in effect; a huge new block becomes operative on January 1, 1993. A few items have been delayed to later dates. The main section of the supplement, describes the European Community in detail, and finally is a brief description of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA). |
