Abstract:This paper contains the findings of postal survey investigating the sensitivity of capital expenditure decisions by the UK's largest industrial firms to recent changes in tax rates and allowances. It examines managerial perceptions of how the scale and timing of investment carried out under the old tax regime would have been affected if the new tax provisions had applied at the time and explores the reasons for the responses, with particular attention to the role of tax in capital budgeting. Comparisons are drawn with previous work , including the findings of earlier case studies of the effects of the 1984 Finance Act on individual investments.
