Abstract:South Africa is a developing country attempting a political transition in the context of deep social cleavages, high levels of violence and a declining economy. The article analyzes labour reforms and developments in industrial relations in South Africa since 1979. The author studies the influence of the political reform initiatives of President de Klerk in 1990 on the industrial relations. The suggestions of the ILO Commission which visited South Africa in 1992 are described in the article. Attention is given to aspects of concern raised in the Commission's report, with the status of domestic and farm workers high on the agenda.
