Abstract:It was a commonplace of the 1980s to talk about the profound changes taking place in financial services. In a decade of immense change and growth, perhaps no single industry appeared to change and grow to quite the same degree, with the possible exception of computers. But other than in certain relatively isolated areas - such as the decartelisation of securities markets in New York, London and Paris - it would be wrong to assume that this extraordinary process of development has brought about universally uniform and efficient financial markets. On the contrary, the long economic boom of those years disguised the extent to which the industry was growing in a chaotic and often inefficient manner, twisted and contorted around the wide legal and cultural variations of national jurisdictions.
