Abstract:In the autumn 1993, prognoses of economic developments in West Germany during the 1993/94 winter and for the rest of the year 1994 were very heterogeneous. Many observes, including the majority of German economic research institutes, had predicted that after the stabilisation of industrial output and incoming orders in the summer the process of recovery would continue in the fourth quarter of 1993. This view seemed to receive support from the improvement in the ifo-Institute's index of the business climate. The unbroken boom on the stock markets clearly also made an impression.
