Abstract:The International Joint Venture (IJV) phenomenon represents two opposing trends: 1. it is becoming increasingly popular as a strategic mode of overseas market entry and expansion; 2. the second trend relates to the high fragility of these arrangements. Several results of empirical studies are reported. It was found that the failure rate of IJVs was above 30 per cent, higher than other modes of entry and operation. Using research data and case examples, the following sub-topics are investigated: 1. growth trend of IJVs; 2. magnitude of international joint venture failures; 3. financial and other implications of international joint venture failures.
