Abstract: | The paper describes an investigation that identified the specific organizational and project-management challenges of global engineering-design projects. The work was carried out initially by literature search, and then by interview with companies operating globally. Five key steps in establishing this capability were identified. Create a global organization. Develop global human-resources management policies. Develop global technical and management methodologies and procedures. Establish a distributed computing and information-technology infrastructure with electronic rapport between locations. Train and develop global project managers with particular enhanced skills in planning, leadership, communication and trouble-shooting. |
