Abstract:For most OECD countries over the last 30 years, there appears to have been little systematic relation between the level of debt and its maturity. One set of countries stands in clear exception to this general statement however, namely, those countries which have now reached debt-GDP rations approaching or exceeding 100 percent. There, the increase in debt has been associated with a sharp reduction in maturity. This paper provides a tentative explanation for these two sets of facts.
