Abstract:Last year's investment levels were the highest for more than a decade. Gold broke away from the claws of the five-year bear market in 1993, thanks to a resurgence of investment buying in Europe and North America. But while funds and other investors were filling their boots, official holders, mainly central banks, continued selling. The developing world suffered more from price sensitivity, and economic weakness contributed to falls in Europe and Japan.
