Abstract:This study uses Analysis of Variance to assess and compare the profitability of large German, Japanese, and American industrial firms over the 1984-90 period. Current Accounting Standards in the US, Germany, and Japan are also examined in order to evaluate their effect on the measured profitability of firms in each country. Even though statistically significant differences were observed, it appears that large German, Japanese, and American companies earned roughly equivalent rates of return during the latter half of the 1980s.
