Abstract:This report considers the market for canned meat products as defined for the National Food Survey (NFS). Consumption of canned meat has fallen slightly in the last five years to total around 155, 000 tons in 1993. Expenditure rose to an estimated pound370m in 1993 because of the increasing complexity and cost of canned meat meals. The devaluation of sterling in September 1992 and the likely consequences on the EU's Common Agricultural Policy of the 1993 completion of the Uruguay round of the GATT negotiations have already adversely affected imports but are likely to encourage local production.
