Abstract:As a counter-example to acknowledged theory it is argued that a subsidiary of a mulatinational corporation amy be established even though transation costs are not responsible for the desire to internalize (potential) high cost licence markets. As the argument is taken to be applicable to multiplant firms in general, the generality of the transaction cost theory of the firm is brought into question. Some theory is also presented in the article by C. Paul Hallwood.
