Abstract:The coming together of the USA, Canada and Mexico in the North American Free Trade Association (NAFTA) on 1 January 1994 has created a North American market comparable to that of the EU. Yet reactions to this "regionalism" in trade policy - with reference to its trade-creating effects - are not universally positive. There is the real danger - as in the European Union - that such large trading areas might increasingly seek to isolate themselves from world markets.
