Abstract:As in other countries in the region, the natural growth of the population is showing a negative tendency a decline of almost 20% between 1989-1991. Although the population of working age is showing a slight increase, the number of economically active persons declined by almost 9% between 1989-1991. The explanation behind these figures is in the large number of pensioners of working age as a result of early retirement from redundant jobs. The average life expectancy - 66.2 for males and 74 for women - is low even by eastern European standards.
