Abstract:Fundamental to the strategy formulation process is the identification of the organization's strengths and weaknesses (its resource capability) and its opportunities and threats (its external environment). The essence of strategic management is to obtain a strategic fit between its resource capability and its environment, which positions a firm in its environment in a way that will ensure its long term success. The paper shows that where managerial perception differs significantly from objective reality, a strategic mismatch will result, to the detriment of organizational performance.
