Abstract:This article analyses the creation and significance of the 1991 EC-Japan motor vehicle accord. First, this essay briefly describes salient features of Europe's automobile industry and the developing presence of Japanese car firms in the region. Second, the article explores in some detail the crafting of the 1991 arrangements and subsequent developments. Finally, this article relates these crucial events in the automobile sector to larger patterns of European policy-making towards Japanese economic competition.
