Abstract:This article highlights a number of concerns and reservations about the way in which the management competency movement has developed. It attempts to analyze the reasons why competences may not be the solution originally envisaged. And it provides an alternative perspective, which promises a more powerful framework in which to discuss individual and organizational performance. Perhaps the major reason for the disarray within the competency movement arises from the confusion over the role of competences.
