Abstract:Global economic activity has remained on an expansionary trend during the current year, although the rate of growth has slowed. Growth in the developing and newly industrialising countries is still strong and there have been signs of recovery in eastern Europe, but the expansion of demand and output in the industrialised coutries has decelerated since the spring. The tightening of US monetary policy has begun to make its restrictive effects felt. In Japan the economic climate has deteriorated once more, largely due to the renewed appreciation of the yen in the spring; the Japanese economy remains locked in stagnation despite the policy efforts made to stimulate growth.
