Abstract:The tiger economy of eastern Europe heads towards a general election with little economic argument. Poland's presidential election is being fought in a wholly different climate from the one which elevated Lech Walesa to the presidency five years ago. In December 1990, the Balcerowicz "shock therapy" programme was the decisive factor. This time no one issue is dominating the campaign, certainly not the economy.
