Abstract:Basing their conclusions on interviews with executive decision-making teams in 48 small to mid-size companies, the authors examine two distinct types of conflict. On the one hand, C-type (cognitive) conflict arises from substantive, issue-related difference is of opinion. This type of conflict is desired because it airs concerns from different perspectives and operating philosophies and leads to better decisions. In fact, one of the reasons for the use of groups in decision making is to foster this sort of conflict.
