| Abstract: | The authors present a cell formation problem in the design of cellular manufacturing systems which includes 3 features. First due to processing time requirements, the model assigns the units to different cells to reduce material handling costs. Second, the model performs two or more non-consecutive operations of a part on the same machine. Finally, it splits the lot into two if the total workload exceeds the daily unit capacity. The results show a reduction of more than 50 percent in material handling costs between the initial solution and the best solution. |
