Abstract: | With its transition to Chinese rule less than four years away, Portugal's enclave is in the midst of a cultural and economic renaissance. But rather than shedding its colonial heritage, like its rival Hong Kong, Macau is actively embracing it. Banners flutter above a circular stadium as a horse festooned in robbons prances around the arena. Abruptly, the band ends its plaintive tune. The crowd hushes and a snorting bull storms into the stadium. The huge beast surveys the scene, focuses on the horse as the target of its fury, and charges. |
