Abstract:The banks are now so entrenched in the system that administrations of any persuasion would have difficulty dislodging them. This was supposed to be the winter that Russia's banks grew up, getting their hooks deep into the equity of the nation's natural treasure. They did not quite make it. Instead the buzz word of the spring is 'crisis", and the big banks' short-term ambition is to survive the accelerating wave of bankruptcies sweeping away many of their smaller compatriots. Autumn 1995 brought exhilarating news to Moscow financial circles.
