Abstract:Suave and unusually young for a top Japanese executive, Kanenari Hideyuki smiles when asked to assess how Japan's troubled flag carrier is faring these days. The tough changes we made are finally paying off, says the director of corporate planning at Japan Airlines. Once JAL was like the national economy: overstaffed and overpriced, coddled by the government, somewhat smug and complacent. It cruised in the high altitudes, oblivious to the eddies and currents swirling in the lower reaches of the world economy.
