Abstract:The mature businesses in the corporate portfolio are often seen as a problem. They do not have the growth potential of other businesses, and as a result they may receive less attention and fewer resources from the corporate parent. Managers in the mature businesses then feel neglected and demotivated, leading to a downward spiral of performance. This article shows how the corporate parent can avoid these pitfalls and develop a more constructive, value added relationship with the mature businesses in the portfolio.
