Abstract:Since 1985, repeated economic reform efforts have not improved the material well-being of the Russians in average. As to the GDP, the decline since 1991 has been greater than that in the United States (USA) during the Great Depression. Since the beginning of the Gorbachev era, there has been a per capita consumption fall for all food products, with the exception of potatoes and bread. Poor nutrition has contributed to poor health and a rising rate of death. A decline in the rate of birth also is attributed, in part, to declining living standards.
