Abstract:Strong growth with little unemployment and low inflation does not have to peter out. Here's why. Could it possibly be any better than this? For two years the U.S. economy has soared ever higher, reaching starry strata last explored in the 1960s. Growth has accelerated to an average rate of 4%, from about 2% in 1995. Unemployment has eased from 5.7% to 4.9%, its lowest level since 1973. Profits after inflation have jumped 14% over the past year, even as real wages creeped up for the first time since the mid 1980s.
