Abstract:In addition to investment in buildings and equipment, other important indicators for the future efficiency of national economies are intangible investments in research and development (R&D), training and continuing training, software, and the improvement of management, information and organisation. These are expenditures which contribute to expanding the knowledge base in order to increase productive capacity and ultimately yield profits. Although such expenditures have all the characteristics of investment spending, they are entered not as investments in national accounts but as public or private consumption or as intermediate demand by enterprises.
