Abstract:The privatisation of British Rail forced an industry based on restrictive practices and adversarial industrial relations to adopt a timetable of rapid modernisation. The author assesses the progress made by the new train operating companies. The privatisation of the railway industry, completed last month, comes 50 years after it was nationalised and 172 years after the invention of Stephenson's Locomotion. But it could be said that in the 15 months since the first new franchises came on track, the railways have embarked on a management journey that has taken them non-stop from the 19th century to the 21st century.
