Abstract:In 1997 General Motors and Volkswagen announced the settlement of a legal battle raged for nearly four years. It has been ugly, public war costing millions for each company, and even threatening to destabilize German-American relations. The terms of the settlement seemed absurdly small , calling for an exchange of intentionally ambigous letters, a purchasing agreement that would actually reduce the two sides' level of trade, and a severing of ties with the controversy's central figure - who had already resigned. Also a $100 million payment was called for from VW to GM.
