Abstract:This paper reviews the different approaches to mixing methods and explores some of the implications of treating the design of the intervention as a social process, as a contract, or a decision to be made. The paper describes an experiment which introduces a formal, albeit limited, method for guiding personal methodological choice. An approach is derived, which emphasises the importance of personal competence, the specific transformation required, the particular context and the practical constraints. The transformation model consists of four steps: update; elicit; design; intervene.
