Abstract:Traditionally high levels of trade union membership among both employed and unemployed workers in Belgium and Denmark are largely attributed to the fact that trade unions in these countries are directly involved in the administration and distribution of state benefits. However, there is often a lack of hard evidence to support this theory. In this feature the authors look at research which shows a definite link between the unions' role and high density levels in these countries.
