Abstract:Following the abortive putsch of August 1991, Russian president Boris Yeltsin installed a team of young reformers led by economist Yegor Gaidar. In 1992 Gaidar's team introduced so-called "shock therapy" in an attempt to create a domestic market economy. The results after five years have been disappointing. The purpose of this paper is to attempt to explain the failures and to draw the principal lessons that can be drawn from the Russian experience.
