Abstract: | Western institutions of democratic capitalism place the individual at the center of society. The liberal idea of improving the well-being of the whole by freeing individuals from imposed social, economic, and political constraints has, over several centuries, proven remarkably successful. We are now in a period of widespread appreciation of these notions throughout the world. No serious competitor exists to the idea that free movement of capital and goods and non-directive government policy create the best opportunities for economic well-being. |
