Abstract:Economic growth in the major industrialized economies has been speeding up since 1995. In the first quarter of 1997 G7 GDP increased by 3.0% year-on-year compared to 1.5% in the final quarter of 1995. There has been significant and sustained acceleration in the U.S., Canada and the UK. Growth in Japan has been rapid but erratic over the 18 last months reflecting the impact of fiscal stimulus. Growth in continental Europe has also been erratic reflecting the impact of the weather, car incentive schemes and statistical quirks. The recovery has remained relatively weak and unemployment has continued to rise.
