Abstract:Traditional performance measures often highlight one area of a firm's activity at the expense of others. The "balanced scorecard" offers a solution. A strategically relevant balanced scorecard approach, at its best, will mean that all managers, and all parts of the business, are pulling together towards the achievement of strategic goals, and are being monitored on this endeavour. A well-known saying is that "what you measure is what you get". Operational performance measurement has tended to be poorly monitored in many firms for a number of reasons.
