Abstract:The collapse of Slovakia's Investicna a Rozvojova Banka will force open the banking sector to foreigners. Government politicking is simply delaying the inevitable. Admittedly, IRB's problems appear the most extreme in the Slovak banking sector. IRB's downfall was not just an isolated incident of mismanagement, or bad luck. It was symptomatic of Slovakia's system of undercapitalised banks which have been starved of know-how and money. It shows the damage that has been caused by government attempts to keep the economy under domestic control.
