Abstract:Heavy industry is variously cited as the region's fatal flaw and its greatest hope. Either way, it needs a lot more money and a lot fewer people. In the past few years Poland has lost 150,000 miners, 60,000 steel workers and the bulk of its arms companies. Not bad going for a country that is frequently accused of having done very little to shake up its heavy industrial sectors. But so far Poland, like the rest of Central Europe, has only done enough to keep industry alive, rather than finding ways of making it viable in the long term.
