Abstract:The Dirichlet model helps in explaining many empirical regularities observed in buying behavior in consumer markets. This paper finds that patterns of buying behavior in the foreign exchange contracts that multinationals buy from banks can be described by this model. The Dirichlet may generalize beyond frequently purchased consumer goods markets to at least some business-to-business services markets. This work complements the results of other descriptive studies of buying behavior in industrial markets.
