Abstract:Less than a year ago the outlook for the Middle East was still relatively encouraging: crude oil prices were running at around $18 for a barrel of Brent and, although there were concerns about prospects in the Asia region, the outlook for the global economy was relatively upbeat. IMF forecasts put world output growth at 4,4% for 1998, similar to expected growth in 1997, and even in October, despite the deepening crisis in Asia, the world economy was still expected to grow by over 4% this year.
