Abstract:From 1979 to the end of 1997, the Chinese overseas enterprises, approved by the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation or put on record (except financial ones) had reached 5356 with the contracted investment of US$6.067 billion. During the early period of reform and opening up, the Chinese overseas enterprises were mainly trade companies. But now they involve broad fields including development of resources (mines exploration, oil and gas exploration, forestry development and deep sea fishery), the assembling of parts of mechanical and electrical products, processing manufacture, communications and transportation, project contracting, medical treatment and public health, hotels, tourism and the catering trade. They can be found in more than 40 countries and regions.
