Abstract:Europe's move towards monetary union was accompanied by an extended discussion whether the transmission mechanism of monetary policy in the potential member economies had converged sufficiently, and if not so, whether this heterogeneity could present a serious downside of European Monetary Union (EMU). If the differences are caused by economic structures that are not affected by the introduction of the single currency, the centralized monetary policy setting of the European Central Bank will lead to asymmetric outcomes.
