Abstract:The history of industrial conflict at McDonald's in mainland Europe will be charted by Tony Royle in a book to be published in December. In this article, the author offers a foretaste of its contents and appeals to employers for greater workplace democracy, backed by regulation. The McDonald's Corporation's stance on unions is well documented. As John Cooke, the company's US labour relations chief in the 1970s, put it: "Unions are inimical to what we stand for and how we operate".
