Abstract:The world economy grew strongly again in the first half of the year 2000. Up to the summer, economic activity was not noticeably dampened by the sharp increase in the price of oil since the beginning of 1999. In particular, the upturn in the USA (now in its tenth year) persisted. Demand and output also expanded significantly in western Europe, while Japan showed marked production growth once again. The newly industrialising countries in Asia and Latin America continued to recover from the crises of 1997/98, thanks to strong foreign demand and in part to expansive economic policies, and most of them achieved high growth rates.
