Abstract:The author states that some 14% of Estonia's GDP comes from transit trade with Russia, so it's little wonder that December's privatization of Eesti Raudtee (Estonian Railways) has ended in a catfight. In theory, the government's designs are laudable. It wants to increase the efficiency of its main railway line, in order to boost transit trade. And since EU regulations mean it will eventually have to allow competing train companies to use its tracks, it reckons selling the national railways is a logical step. But the privatization is not going smoothly, to say the least. In conclusion the author also states that still, some kind of privatization may yet happen, whatever the outcome of the legal disputes.
