Abstract:The World Trade Organization (WTO) Agreement on Agriculture that emerged from the Uruguay Round of multilateral trade negotiations provided a comprehensive framework for opening markets and reducing policy-based market distortions. This agreement addressed three issues of government intervention in agriculture: domestic support, export subsidies, and market access. The inclusion of domestic support was explicit recognition that domestic programmes could adversely affect trade.
