Abstract: | This report examines the Italy retail market for soup. The report covers the time period 1995-1999 with forecasts to the year 2004. The retail market for soup is divided into the following two sectors: canned; dried. Soup does not represent a popular meal in traditional Italian cuisine. The only products available in the market are nearly always vegetable-based, as meat or fish-based soups are almost unheard of in Italy. The paper concludes that the market for prepared soup declined by 3.1% in real terms over the review period, due to declining prices and stagnating consumption. Dried soup was the better performing sector, growing by 3.7% in real terms between 1995 and 1999. The growing popularity of cream soup was the main factor underpinning this growth. |
