Abstract:Over the last 25 years, numerous studies showed surprisingly low correlations btw. price and quality of consumer goods. The present paper suggests that the price of a product cannot necessarily be regarded as bad indicator of the productÂ’s comprehensive quality but only of its functional usefulness as assessed in comparative product tests. In addition, it demonstrates that low price/quality correlations do not imply that markets or competition fail to work efficiently (original in German).
