Abstract:The slowdown in the UK, and indeed the world economy, has been gradual. Underlying this so-called 'growth recession' has been a two-speed economy for a number of years with service sector growth balancing a lacklustre performance elsewhere in the UK economy. Even within the service sector itself, there are significant differences between services sold to businesses and those sold to consumers. What the sector needs is a major boost in confidence and this is difficult to see in the context of a moderating housing market, rising employment costs and a cautious approach to discretionary spending by both consumers and businesses.
