Abstract: | Many Europeans wish to keep and promote the diversity of their cultures, based on history and long traditions of artistic creation. In Europe, not only individuals are interested in culture but also the public policy makers. Culture is mainly a national matter. Cultural cooperation, however, has become a recognized aim of action at a European level. The Treaty on the European Union stipulates that Europe must consider cultural aspects in the definition and implementation of its policies as a whole. The diversity of cultures in Europe is reflected by a diversity of languages, which are the means of expression of cultures. |
